L01: Remote sensing and LiDAR

Things we cover in this session

This session is the first (and only) which focuses on LiDAR, mainly in order to enable the Advanced GIS module to build upon those datasets. Since in-depth analysis will also be part of the GIS module, we will focus on the general topic of converting 3D point cloud information to 2D raster data.

Things you need for this session

Things to take home from this session

At the end of this session you should be able to

  • explain the principle of LiDAR observations
  • to handle LAS datasets in (Arc)GIS software or other tools
  • to retrieve individual information subsets from LAS/point clouds and store them in a raster format
