L04: Artificial images

Things we cover in this session

This session focuses on the computation of artificial images, specifically on (visible) spectral indices and spatial filtering. Such images can be used for both visual analysis and as explanatory layers in e.g. land-cover classifications which we will tackle in the next session.

At the end of this session you should be able to

  • explain the basis for virtually all kinds of spectral indices
  • implement functions to compute rather simple artificial images based on some literature
  • discuss some general guidelines in selecting appropriate indices for a specific task
  • discuss the added value of filtered images in prediction/classification tasks
